PEDRO RESTREPO
for Fernanda Restrepo Arismendi
Straight and solid
like the trunk of an oak,
he looks to the horizon
where the bones of his sons might be.
He’s been searching more than thirty years,
dredging the lagoon,
lifting the stones,
and screaming in the night
what the police deny but everyone knows.
But he’s not so much a hero
for his unstoppable search.
Maybe not for his calmness
nor for the weeping hidden in his pillow.
Not so much a hero for loving again
after they took away his heart,
or for never letting them bring him down
or intimidate him.
The purest and most tenacious heroism
is in the day-to-day,
in the quiet way he holds up
his daughter's world
beyond the terror
with a majestic scaffold of love.
